Vocabulary is an essential part of language learning. It is also central to language teaching and is of paramount importance to a language learner. Vocabulary acquisition involves two aspects: quantity and quality. In the context of learning Arabic as a second language, the quantity of words is very important. A large amount of vocabulary acquired will help learners in their careers. Thus, this study aims to examine the vocabulary size among the final-year students of Arabic Language Studies. A set of questionnaires and the Arabic Vocabulary Level Test (aVLT), adapted from the Vocabulary Level Test (Nation, 1998, 2001), were administered to identify the receptive vocabulary size of the respondents. The respondents to the study consisted of 31 undergraduate students from Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS), Malaysia. The findings of the study show that, on average, each respondent has acquired about 2223 high-frequency words. Previous studies showed that knowing as few as 2000 high-frequency words could lead learners to achieve the minimum language proficiency requirement. This study suggests that vocabulary development should be done explicitly and continuously from the early stages of study until the tertiary level.
