Abstract

Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim Rasm Uthmani, widely known as Tafsir Mahmud Yunus (TMY), is one of the most prominent Malay translations of Quranic meanings in the Malay world. This translation has received broad acceptance among the Malay community, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia, due to its use of clear and straightforward language that makes it accessible to readers from diverse backgrounds. This study aimed to analyse the translation approach of Mahmud Yunus by examining selected Quranic verses that contain kināyah or metonymic discourse as the research samples. Metonymy corresponds to kiasan (figurative expression) in Malay and represents one of the key aspects of ʿilm al-bayān (the study of figures of speech). In other words, metonymy is a type of figurative language that conveys meaning indirectly, without referring to the literal sense of the expression. Therefore, Quranic metonymic discourse needs to be translated into other languages using an appropriate translation approach to ensure that the intended message is accurately conveyed to target readers while maintaining semantic equivalence between the source text and the translated text. Based on the analysis of six (6) selected verses, this study emphasised that Mahmud Yunus was inconsistent in his use of translation approaches, which resulted in ambiguity in some instances concerning the overall meaning of the discourse.

Author Biographies

Nasimah Abdullah, Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS), MALAYSIA.

Nasimah Abdullah received her PhD in Arabic Linguistic Studies in 2015 and her Master of Human Sciences (Arabic as a Second Language) in 2000 from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She also holds a Bachelor of Human Sciences (Arabic Language and Literature) from the same university, obtained in 1997. Her research interests encompass Arabic linguistics, the teaching of Arabic as a second language, Arabic–Malay translation, and semantics. Furthermore, she holds several registered National Intellectual Property Rights related to innovations in Arabic learning and teaching. She has also actively participated in research funded by internal university grants as well as collaborative projects supported by partner institutions. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Language Studies and Arabic Linguistics, and serves as the Head of Programme for the Doctor of Philosophy in Arabic Studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Civilisation (FPPI), Selangor Islamic University (UIS). Previously, she served as Deputy Dean (Academic and Research Affairs) of FPPI, UIS from 2013 to 2018. Prior to that, she was the Acting Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), UIS in 2012, and the Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Academy of Islamic Studies (AI), UIS from 2005 to 2007. Muh. Naim Madjid holds a PhD in Arabic Literary Studies from the International Islamic University Malaysia, awarded in 2018. He obtained his Master of Islamic Studies in Arabic Language and Literature from the National University of Malaysia in 2011 and his Bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language and Literature from the State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati (UIN SGD), Bandung, Indonesia, in 2006. He has been serving as a lecturer in the Department of Arabic Education, Faculty of Language Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia, since 2018. From 2021 to 2025, he held the position of Head of the Department of Arabic Language Education. His research interests include Arabic language and literature, translation studies, Arabic rhetoric, Arabic linguistics, Arabic learning and teaching, Qurʾanic studies, and Islamic education. He has published widely in reputable international journals and conference proceedings indexed by Scopus. In addition, he holds several registered National Intellectual Property Rights related to Arabic learning innovations. He has actively engaged in research collaborations supported by international funding as well as internal university grants, involving partnerships with universities in Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, South Korea, Turkey, and Canada.
